Door Repairs: Tips to Remedying Squeaky Doors
Posted on: 21 March 2017
Over time, you may find that your doors have become much noisier than normal. This noise will typically manifest as squeaking due to the numerous movable parts that comprise doors. Some homeowners may opt to ignore this squeaking, assuming that it would be too difficult to remedy on their own. The truth though is that it is not hard to troubleshoot the cause of the squeaking and possibly fix it on your own. Below are some of the tips that could come in handy in remedying squeaky doors.
Tip 1: Inspect for visible damage
One of the more common reasons why your doors may start to squeak is if the hardware has acquired some damage. Some of the components that you should focus on when carrying out a visual inspection include the hinges of the doors, the tracks and wheels of sliding doors, the opening mechanism and any other part that moves on a constant basis When inspecting the wheels, check to determine whether they have started to wobble when you are operating the doors. If they indeed are wobbling, chances are they have become worn out and would have to be replaced to restore the functionality of the doors.
Tip 2: Tighten the fasteners
The second reason why your doors may be squeaking is simply the hardware coming loose. Bear in mind that doors tend to be quite heavy. Therefore, the constant opening and closing will exert pressure on the fasteners, causing them to come loose over time. Luckily, this is one of the easiest fixes when it comes to squeaky doors. Simply take a socket wrench and tighten all the hinges and nuts that may have loosened. It should be noted that it is prudent to tighten these fasteners on a routine basis as a safety precaution to prevent the doors from becoming unsecured. When you are tightening the fasteners and find that some of the hinges have acquired damage, it would be best to simply replace them rather than tighten, as they will eventually become worse for wear.
Tip 3: Clean the door components
The third reason why doors may start to squeak is due to accumulation of dirt. As the dirt collects on the movable parts, it becomes harder for them to function at optimum. It should also be noted that grime collecting on the movable parts can also promote the onset of corrosion, as moisture can collect in this dirt. It is advisable to routinely clean the metallic components with a cleaning solvent that contains anticorrosive properties that would protect the parts from rusting.
